Annette Bening joins cast of Captain Marvel — but who is she playing?

Presented by: James Comtois

Marvel Studios is getting another dose of prestige star power: Annette Bening is boarding the cast of Captain Marvel, according to the The Hollywood Reporter. This marks the four-time Oscar nominee’s first time appearing in a superhero movie.

Bening's arrival is in line with Marvel’s practice of bringing in top-tier talent and prestige stars for its main and supporting roles (see Michael Douglas in Ant-Man, Sir Anthony Hopkins in Thor, Christopher Eccleston in Thor: The Dark World, and Tommy Lee Jones in Captain America: The First Avenger). In fact, Captain Marvel herself — Brie Larson — is a Best Actress Oscar winner.

Bening joins a cast that includes Jude Law, Ben Mendelsohn, Gemma Chan, Djimon Hounsou, and Lee Pace. And since the film will take place in the 1990s, Clark Gregg and Samuel L. Jackson will also appear in the film — presumably looking younger.

Although details on Bening’s character are being kept under wraps, Variety film reporter Justin Kroll noted on Twitter that Bening would be playing the mother of Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel. That intel, however, has yet to be officially confirmed.

Bening comes aboard a film that will play a pivotal role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe following the shocking ending for Avengers: Infinity War and leading up to its aftermath with Avengers 4 in May 2019.

Warning: Infinity War plot spoilers to follow.

As fans discovered, Nick Fury (Jackson) sends a signal to Captain Marvel via pager just before dissolving into dust, thanks to Thanos succeeding in his goal of obtaining all the Infinity Stones and wiping out half of the cosmos. Although the upcoming movie takes place a couple decades in the past, many are anticipating that Captain Marvel will play a key role in saving the universe from Thanos.

Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck are directing the movie, which will be Marvel’s first feature led by a woman. Captain Marvel is currently in production and slated for a Mar. 7, 2019 release.
