Deadpool 2 star Josh Brolin gets a birthday portrait surprise from Ryan Reynolds
Presented by: Andrew Wheeler
Josh Brolin must be having a pretty special year, not just because of his starring roles in Deadpool 2 and Avengers: Infinity War, but because today he hits the personal milestone of his 50th birthday. To mark the occasion, Deadpool 2 co-star Ryan Reynolds posted a tribute to his new old buddy on Instagram.
Hot on the heels of last week's debut trailer, the latest promotional image for Deadpool 2 shows Cable, Brolin's weary mercenary character, posing for a portrait for Reynolds' Deadpool, though the painting on the canvas shows Brolin in another of his famous roles, as Brant in the 1985 movie Goonies. That movie was Brolin's cinematic debut, made back when he was still in his late teens.
The Instagram post is captioned, "Happy Birthday, Bright Eye. You don’t taste a day over 40." "Bright Eye" is one of many nicknames Deadpool might use for Cable in the movie, in reference to his sometimes glowing artificial eye. The origin for the rest of the caption is something we can leave to your imagination, but who knows, maybe that's in the movie too? As Zayn Malik can tell you, Deadpool has a history of personally invasive birthday greetings.
This image is the latest in a series of promotions for Deadpool 2 with a painting theme. The movie previously invoked Bob Ross for a memorable teaser trailer, and both Michelangelo's "Creation of Adam" from the roof of the Sistine Chapel and the iconic Normal Rockwell Thanksgiving painting "Freedom From Want". This piece evokes a pose from another Rockwell piece, "Triple Self Portrait".
Deadpool 2 arrives in theaters on May 18. The probably erroneous official summary describes the movie as follows:
"After surviving a near fatal bovine attack, a disfigured cafeteria chef (Wade Wilson) struggles to fulfill his dream of becoming Mayberry’s hottest bartender while also learning to cope with his lost sense of taste. Searching to regain his spice for life, as well as a flux capacitor, Wade must battle ninjas, the yakuza, and a pack of sexually aggressive canines, as he journeys around the world to discover the importance of family, friendship, and flavor – finding a new taste for adventure and earning the coveted coffee mug title of World’s Best Lover."
Honestly, I think they just lifted the plot summary for Ready Player One.
