It's tough to follow a larger-than-life actor like Kenny Baker, who played the feisty astromech R2-D2 in the original Star Wars Trilogy, but in Hollywood the show -- and the droid -- must go on.
News today from THR has revealed that actor Jimmy Vee will be the new man under the dome for R2-D2 in Rian Johnson's Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The Scottish actor and stunt man has appeared in numerous fantasy and sci-fi properties including Harry Potter and Doctor Who, playing a menagerie of aliens and creatures.
Vee has already done some time in the R2-D2 costume in 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens in an uncredited performance attributed to Kenny Baker out of respect for all his pioneering work. Baker passed away last summer at the age of 81.
In a statement issued by Vee's production agency, Oh So Small, the actor had this to say:
"It's been an absolute pleasure to have worked alongside the legendary Kenny Baker. Kenny was a fantastic actor and taught me all the 'tricks' on how he brought R2-D2 to life which I will continue to portray in his honor. I'm so excited to be a part of the Star Wars universe and can't wait for everyone to see what we've been working so hard on for the last year."
