Kevin Feige says Marvel is busy enough without X-Men and Fantastic Four, at least for now

As 21st Century Fox weighs whether to finally break down and hand over hot Marvel properties like Fantastic Four, X-Men, and Deadpool to Disney for a princely sum, the Disney side of Marvel doesn’t appear to be scurrying ahead of time to script the potentially new pickups for a quick entrance into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said in a recent interview that the MCU is already a pretty rambunctious and active film universe at the moment, with two blockbuster movies (Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War) as well as the just-released Ant-Man and the Wasp both raising and reshuffling fan expectations in mind-bending ways that have the studio’s full creative attention for the time being.

Asked whether he’s already doing any serious daydreaming about how to welcome the X-Men and the rest of their Marvel stablemates at Fox into the MCU, Feige demurred, saying he’s waiting for the Disney-Fox deal to actually go through and that any ideas he’s had are still in the formative stages.

“Not until we’re given the word [about the merger],” Feige told the Los Angeles Daily News. “I have vague dreams and vague ideas. But right now, bringing to life the 10,000-plus characters that Marvel fully controls is what the gameplan is.”

Fair enough, especially when the MCU is in the midst of launching its next wave of audience-pleasing answers to some seriously burning questions raised by Infinity War, as well as a Black Panther sequel, Captain Marvel, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, to name but a few hotly anticipated, in-development projects.

Whether the Disney-Fox deal ultimately brings Marvel’s Fox orphans into the MCU, Feige indicated he plans to continue to be a part of it all. Asked whether he has any interest in other high-profile positions under the larger Disney umbrella — like potentially succeeding Kathleen Kennedy at Lucasfilm or John Lasseter at Pixar — Feige said Marvel’s current lineup of projects has his full attention. “I’m very busy for the foreseeable future,” he assured.
