New Ready Player One trailer takes on the OASIS
Presented by: James Comtois
Save the OASIS. Save the world. The new “Dreamer” trailer for Steven Spielberg's adaptation of Ernest Cline's best-selling novel Ready Player One is up, and provides a slightly better idea of what the OASIS is, as well as our heroes' quest.
“This is the OASIS,” explains teenage hero Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) in the new trailer for the film about 1980s pop-culture nostalgia directed by 1980s pop culture’s principal architect. “A whole virtual universe. You can do anything. Be anyone. Without going anywhere at all.”
As players enter and wander around the expansive VR world, Wade continues: “A contest. Three impossible challenges. The first to finish gets complete control of the OASIS. Which means, complete control of the future.”
However, fellow player Artemis (Olivia Cooke) suggests that “the contest has got to be about connecting with someone; connecting with the world.”
“So,” she asks before she and Wade clasp hands and leap into a virtual abyss. "We take it together?"
Then, as has been the case with previous trailers, relics of 1980s pop culture smash up against one another — like Doc Brown’s DeLorean and Bigfoot (look it up) racing to dodge the jaws of Jurassic Park’s T-Rex. All of this, of course, is set to “Take on Me.” And not for nothing, folks, but if you don’t get chills from the orchestral version of Ah-Ha’s ‘80s masterpiece, you may be dead inside.
Cline's book takes place in a dystopian future where most of the population spends its time in a virtual-reality world known as OASIS. When OASIS’ creator James Halliday (Mark Rylance) dies, he leaves behind a game in which the winner will be awarded complete ownership of OASIS. That, and billions of dollars.
Wade plays the game in the hopes of keeping OASIS a free public utility, but he must go up against Innovative Online Industries (IOI), a corporation led by Nolan Sorrento (Ben Mendelsohn) that wants to privatize and profit from the VR world.
Ready Player One hits theatres March 29. We’ll wave to you from the finish line, McFly.
