DC's upcoming Shazam! film has been in the works for a minute, but now Warner Bros. is dropping a few more breadcrumbs for eager fans that officially confirm story info about the Zachary Levi-helmed superhero flick.
The studio has released the first official synopsis for Shazam!, which verifies several important plot details for the latest DCEU film. First, though, the synopsis itself:
We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana.
Shazam!'s synopsis substantiates several previously posited theories that have swirled around the movie. First, actor Mark Strong will definitely be playing the film's Big Bad. In the comics, Dr. Sivana is known as a brilliant scientist with a genius-level intellect who frequently develops highly advanced technology to stop his nemesis. Second, it looks like Billy Batson will be aged up to 14 years old from his usual comics age of 10, though admittedly his age has fluctuated somewhat across the character's various incarnations.
In addition to plot info, the Warner Bros. announcement confirms several more additions to Shazam!'s cast, including IT's Jack Dylan Grazer as Billy’s best friend and foster brother, Freddy; Grace Fulton as Billy's sister Mary; Faithe Herman as Darla; Ian Chen as Eugene; and Jovan Armand as Pedro. Cooper Andrews and Marta Millans will play Victor and Rosa Vasquez, Billy's foster parents. Ron Cephas Jones will play the Wizard. And although his Black Adam will not be appearing in the film, Dwayne Johnson is attached as an executive producer.
