Watch: Cyborg writer John Semper, Jr. on telling a story about race through a superhero lens
We recently caught up with Cyborg writer John Semper Jr. to talk about where he’s been taking Cyborg in the wake of Rebirth — and where Vic Stone is heading next.
Semper said he views Vic as a character who can be symbolic about what it’s like to be a black man in Detroit, and he’s been trying to get into the nuances of what it means to be a person of color in the world, and finding that perspective and how it blends into the classic comic story of Cyborg. He said these first arcs have been about Vic ultimately realizing he is more committed to being a human than a machine. But that doesn’t mean he won’t be tempted to go the other direction every step of the way. He’s taken a slow roll to get to this point, but Semper said he believes it will all start to pay off for readers in the next few issues.
